Bursary To Career
Master of Engineering Talent-Incubation Pathway
A managed postgraduate engineering pipeline with Geotheta
A three-year managed pathway that produces a master's-qualified engineer with three years of documented, in-industry experience — pairing a UNISA Master of Engineering with structured workplace mentorship and live project work at Geotheta, one of South Africa's fastest-growing engineering firms.
The need
A managed pipeline, not an ordinary bursary
An ordinary bursary funds study. This pathway delivers a master's-qualified engineer with three years of documented workplace experience, professional mentorship, and a credible work-reference pathway — the scarce-skills outcome mines and engineering firms struggle to build in-house.
The scarce-skill gap
South Africa's mining, water, and infrastructure sectors face a shortage of black postgraduate engineers with real project experience and a route to professional registration.
The qualification
Candidates complete UNISA's Master of Engineering (90121), a 180-credit, NQF Level 9 research degree, by distance over three years while employed.
The workplace
Geotheta, one of South Africa's fastest-growing engineering companies, hosts each candidate on live projects so the degree and the work reinforce one another.
The programme
Research and real project work reinforce each other
Study and work become one and the same. Earned through research rather than classroom modules, the MEng lets each candidate turn live Geotheta projects into their dissertation — solving real engineering problems by day and building a master's degree from that very work. Three years on, they hold both the qualification and the track record to prove it.
- Mine- and infrastructure-relevant research: water, tailings, geotechnical risk, rehabilitation, roads, energy, or project delivery.
- Structured, documented ECSA-aligned professional development toward candidacy registration.
- Live engineering project delivery that builds a credible portfolio and industry references.
The journey
A structured three-year research journey
The programme sequences supervisor appointment and proposal approval in year one into data collection and dissertation completion by year three, with academic and life support throughout.
Year 1
Research outline, supervisor appointment, literature review, and an approved research proposal — required by UNISA in the first year.
Year 2
Data collection, engineering investigation, and analysis drawn from authorised Geotheta project work.
Year 3
Dissertation completion, examination, and graduation, alongside continued workplace delivery.
Throughout
Learner and academic support, life-skills development, stipend, and accommodation support keep candidates stable and focused.
Career pathway
Career pathway: scarce-skill engineering talent
By graduation the candidate holds an NQF Level 9 qualification, three years of structured workplace experience, professional mentorship, and reputable industry references — ready for senior technical and leadership roles.
Master's-qualified engineer
A scarce postgraduate qualification paired with real, documented project experience.
ECSA candidacy portfolio
Training and experience reports, competency records, and mentor sign-offs that advance professional registration.
Industry references
A credible work-reference pathway built on delivered project work at a growing engineering firm.
Leadership trajectory
A profile positioned for long-term technical and management roles in mining, infrastructure, and consulting.
Committed employment
Candidates complete their research degree while working on live Geotheta engineering projects, exiting with three years of experience, professional references, and an ECSA-aligned candidacy portfolio positioned for long-term technical and leadership roles.
Investment
Annual programme cost per candidate
One managed investment turns transformation spend into a finished result: a master's-qualified engineer with three years of delivered project work, structured mentorship, and a route to professional registration. Tuition is only a fraction of the cost — the package covers everything needed to carry a high-potential candidate all the way to a work-ready professional, fully administered and reported on your behalf.

For funders
A scarce-skills pipeline you can't buy off the shelf
Your sponsorship converts skills-development spend into a master's-qualified engineer who has already delivered on live projects — with the research aimed at the challenges your own operation faces. This is workforce development you would otherwise have to build in-house, delivered and fully documented for you.
Managed development of scarce skills
A fully managed pipeline develops black master's-qualified engineers with three years of real project experience and a route to ECSA registration — building scarce skills the economy is short of, hosted and mentored at Geotheta so the workplace burden never falls on you.
Research aimed at your operations
Each dissertation targets a challenge that matters to you — water, tailings, geotechnical risk, infrastructure integrity, rehabilitation, roads, energy, or project delivery — so your funding produces usable engineering insight, not a generic degree.
Recognised B-BBEE skills-development spend
Tuition, prescribed books, structured training, and mentorship map to recognised skills-development expenditure, delivered with a full evidence pack ready for your verification agency.
Social licence and transformation
Candidates are recruited from mine-hosting and surrounding communities, strengthening local skills, community relationships, and your social licence to operate.
Transformation that produces engineering resources, not unemployed graduates
Every rand of transformation spend produces a working, master's-qualified engineering resource with three years of industry-based development — not another graduate holding a degree with no experience and no job. That is the difference between a tuition-only bursary and a managed talent-incubation pipeline.
- 1Confirm the number of MEng candidates or sponsorship value you want to support.
- 2Choose the full managed package, a co-funded employer model, or a university-only scholarship option.
- 3Launch the cohort with MRC's programme management, reporting, and B-BBEE compliance package, alongside Geotheta's workplace hosting.
